German alpinist Jost Kobusch is once again setting his sights on Mount Everest in the most extreme style imaginable: solo, in winter, and without supplemental oxygen. According to an announcement published on September 26, 2025, Kobusch plans to begin his expedition on December 22, 2026, tackling the mountain via the West Ridge.

Kobusch has been pursuing this audacious project for several years. During his last attempt in winter 2024/25, he managed to climb as high as 7,537 meters – a remarkable height for such a route under harsh seasonal conditions. While he did not reach the summit, it was already considered a significant achievement in the world of high-altitude mountaineering.

Now, Kobusch is ready to try again, aiming to push even higher and further test the boundaries of endurance and possibility on the world’s tallest mountain. Everest in winter is notorious for its brutal weather: extreme cold, hurricane-force winds, and an atmosphere with almost no margin for error. Attempting it alone and without oxygen is one of the boldest challenges an alpinist can face.

This time, the journey will also be more accessible to the public. Kobusch’s expedition will be documented as a YouTube series, allowing viewers to follow along with his progress and gain a rare inside look into what it takes to confront Everest under such extreme conditions.

With his announcement, Kobusch has once again sparked interest and debate in the mountaineering community. His approach is not about commercial expeditions or speed records, but about the pure, raw style of climbing that seeks to test the human spirit against the most formidable odds.

The countdown to December 2026 is now underway – and the mountaineering world will be watching closely as Jost Kobusch takes on Everest once again.
