The Kazbegi to Khevsureti route is only accessible for a few months each year — when the snow has cleared, the ridges are dry, and the lakes glow in full alpine color. If you’ve been waiting for the right trek to push your limits and connect with Georgia’s wildest landscapes, this is it. The trail is open.
While this trek doesn’t require technical climbing skills, good overall fitness is essential. Expect daily hikes of 4-8 hours over uneven terrain with sustained ascents and descents. We recommend preparing with regular cardio (hiking, running, cycling) and leg-strengthening exercises at least 4–6 weeks before the tour. If possible, do a few practice hikes with a backpack to get used to carrying weight across varied terrain.

This trek is rated moderate to challenging, depending on your fitness level and experience. Expect daily hikes of 12–20 km, with significant elevation gains (up to 1300m) and high-altitude terrain, especially on the Chaukhi Pass crossing. Prior trekking experience is strongly recommended.
The ideal time to hike Chaukhi Pass is between mid-June and late September, when the snow has melted and the trails are accessible. Outside this window, the route may be impassable due to snow and unstable weather conditions.
The only way to reach Roshka from Juta is on foot — via a 17+ km alpine trail that crosses the 3341m Chaukhi Pass and descends past the Abudelauri Lakes. It’s a full-day hike and one of the most scenic routes in the Caucasus. Jeep support ends at Juta.
Mt. Chaukhi lies in the eastern Greater Caucasus, near Juta village in the Kazbegi region. Known as the “Georgian Dolomites” for its dramatic spires, the massif borders the Khevi and Khevsureti regions and marks the high point of the Chaukhi Pass trek.
Juta village sits at around 2150 meters above sea level. It’s one of the highest inhabited settlements in Georgia and the starting point for many alpine treks, including the Juta to Roshka route via Chaukhi Pass.
From Tbilisi, you’ll first travel 3–4 hours to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) via the Georgian Military Highway. From there, a 4WD vehicle is needed for the 30-minute off-road climb to Juta. The total trip takes around 4–5 hours.
Ushguli, at 2,200m, is Europe’s highest inhabited village, set beneath Mount Shkhara on this Svaneti trekking tour.
You’ll need solid hiking boots, trekking poles, layers for changing weather, and a daypack. Since the Chaukhi Pass reaches over 3300m, wind and temperature shifts can be extreme. A gear checklist is included upon booking.
It’s possible but not recommended unless you’re experienced with alpine navigation. The route includes steep sections, remote terrain, and weather exposure. Guided support ensures safety, trail knowledge, and local logistics.
The Abudelauri Lakes sit on the far side of Chaukhi Pass in Khevsureti, and there are no facilities until you reach Roshka village. This is one of the most remote and scenic parts of the trek — ideal for those seeking solitude and raw beauty.
This compact 4-day adventure combines some of Georgia’s most iconic alpine routes — from the Gergeti Glacier and Truso Valley to the high Chaukhi Pass and remote Abudelauri Lakes. It’s a rare trek that links two mountain regions in one seamless journey.
